On behalf of the RAND Corporation, Headway Workforce Solutions is currently seeking Part-Time School Based Research Assistants to work on the Partnerships for Social and Emotional Learning Initiative (PSELI) study. The PSELI study will focus on the effectiveness of SEL programs and practices, and on the alignment between schools and after-school programs.

The RAND Corporation is a non-profit institution that helps improve policy and decision making through research and analysis. As a non-partisan organization, RAND is widely respected for operating independent of political and commercial pressures. Approximately 1,700 people from more than 50 countries work at RAND. The RAND Education staff of more than 40 researchers includes education specialists, cognitive scientists, cost analysts, demographers, economists, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, computer scientists, and systems analysts.

Position Description:

RAND Education seeks one Research Assistant in each of the six communities to work with a team of experienced education researchers on a study of the PSELI initiative during spring 2020. Main responsibilities include conducting in-person interviews and focus groups with the following types of interviewees over several weeks in spring 2020. The data collection period will be set with each community and could occur as early as March 1, 2020 and as late as April 30, 2020. For each interview, the Research Assistant will use an interview protocol developed by RAND researchers. In addition, this position includes attending a required virtual training (approximately four hours) on interview and focus group methods and protocols in February 2020.

Below we list the five types of interviews and estimated number of interviews for each type. Interview types 1-4 will occur during the school or the after-school day. Interview type 5 will occur in the early evening or weekend date and varies.

  • 10-14 1-hour in-person interviews of school principals
  • 8-14 1-hour in-person interviews of managers of after-school programs (precise number of managers varies by community)
  • 5-7 1-hour in-person group interviews of up to 10 school teachers per group interview
  • 3-7 1-hour in-person group interviews of up to 10 after-school instructors per group interview
  • 2 1-hour focus groups of up to 15 parent/guardians per focus group.

Interviewers will be required to use audio recorders (provided by RAND) during the interviews and type notes using Microsoft Word when audio recording is not permissible. This is an hourly position. This position is expected to require approximately 70-80 hours, which will be spread across several weeks in February-April 2020; weekly hours will vary. Hourly rate is commensurate with experience.         

Special Notes:

Staff will be required to use his or her own laptop and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) daily and provide his or her own transportation to and from the various school sites. Staff will be reimbursed for mileage and tolls (if applicable) to and from the school sites and for travel time between school sites if there are multiple sites scheduled on the same day.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree and experience conducting interviews for research purposes is required. A candidate with qualitative research training is preferred. Successful candidates will be organized, professional, thoughtful, thorough, able to problem solve on site, and disciplined researchers with excellent communication skills. This position also requires basic computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
