On behalf of The RAND Corporation, Headway Workforce Solutions is seeking part-time Field Interviewers/Phlebotomist. The RAND Corporation is a non-profit research organization providing objective analysis and effective solutions that address the challenges facing the public and private sectors around the world. The RAND Survey Research Group (SRG) is currently hiring a Field Interviewer/Phlebotomist to work on the NAYSHAW Project (Native American Youth, Sleep, Health and Wellness).The project aims to learn about urban American Indian/Alaska Native youths’ sleep patterns and how sleep affects teens’ health.

This is a part-time, hourly, temporary adjunct staff position without benefits. Expected duration of the study is through April 2022. Field Interviewers are expected to work approximately 8-15 hours per week. This position will require traveling throughout Central California as well as trips to Northern and Southern California as needed. All travel costs will be covered by the project. The pay rate is $23.00 per hour.


The field Interviewer/phlebotomist will ensure participants are eligible to participate in the NAYSHAW Project, obtain consent from the legal guardian, collect contact information and orient the participant to a survey s/he will complete on a tablet. The legal guardian will also complete a brief paper survey. Then, the Field Interviewer will take anthropometric measurements, specifically height, weight and a waist measurement.  Next, the interviewer will take the participant’s blood pressure and conduct a venipuncture blood draw, which will be tested for cholesterol, blood sugar and triglycerides. Some participants will be asked to answer further questions about their sleep habits in the form of a conversational interview with the Field Interviewer.  All participants will be asked to wear an activity meter and complete a sleep diary for 7 days to track sleep habits. The field Interviewer will teach participants how to use the activity meter and complete the diaries, and will also schedule a time a week later to pick the equipment back up. The work schedule will vary from week to week.  Our participants live all over California. We are looking for a Field Interviewer/Phlebotomist who is willing to travel throughout Fresno County and the surrounding area as well as travel to other places in California as needed. All travel costs will be covered by the project.

  • MUST be a Certified Phlebotomist (minimum CPT I)
  • MUST have a flexible schedule, including regular evening and possible weekend work
  • Able to work 8-15 hours per week
  • Good basic computer skills required
  • Willing to travel throughout Central California and other parts of California as needed
  • Comfortable working with teens
  • Motivated, self-starter, comfortable working independently and on a team
  • Exceptional time-management, organizational and recordkeeping skills required
  • Knowledgeable about urban Native culture/involvement in the community highly preferred
  • Prior surveying or related professional experience highly preferred
  • Valid driver’s license, dependable car, and proof of auto insurance
  • Continued employment eligibility is contingent upon successful completion of a mandatory training, verified reference checks, a DMV background check and criminal background check including Megan’s Law.  

Physical Requirements:
  • Possess effective communication skills through speech and listening, and fluency in English through reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Be exposed to various types of weather, fumes, odor, and environments as might be expected in a field interviewing role
