Job Description

On behalf of American Institutes for Research (AIR), Headway Workforce Solutions is seeking Part-Time Classroom Observers to work on a school-based research study, the Illinois Dual Language Teacher Leadership Program Evaluation, throughout the Chicagoland area.

American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a behavioral and social science research organization. AIR’s overriding goal is to use the best science available to bring the most effective ideas and approaches to enhancing everyday life.

Individuals who have teaching credentials and classroom teaching experience are encouraged to apply, including retired teachers. Pay for this position begins at $20 per hour but will vary based on experience. Mileage will be reimbursed at $.545 per mile.


As a Part-Time Classroom Observer, you will:
  • Conduct standardized classroom observations of Dual Language Classrooms
  • Observe classrooms approximately 10-20 hours per week for 5 weeks in March through April 2018.
  • Submit all classroom observation data according to required deadlines and procedures.
  • Participate in scheduled calls with project coordinator.
  • Submit time, mileage, and expense forms weekly.

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree
  • Teaching credentials and classroom teaching experience in Kindergarten through 12 grade
  • Strong interpersonal skills with both adults and children of elementary school through high school ages
  • Ability to work well independently and under the direction of project coordinators
  • Access to personal, reliable transportation
  • Access to a reliable computer, personal email account, and high-speed internet.

Training and Schedule:
  • 1 day paid, in-person, mandatory training is tentatively scheduled to be held in the Chicago area on March 7th, 2018
  • Further employment is contingent upon successful completion training and passing a certification test after completion.
  • Ability to work between the hours of 7:00 am and 5 pm (10-20 hours/week) during the data collection period
  • Qualified candidates should be available to commit for the full length of the study.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
  • Frequent local travel to respondent locations
  • Be outside and exposed to all types of weather
  • Be exposed to fumes and odors as might be expected in varied environments
  • Communicate through speech and listening
  • Sitting, observing, and recording notes in classrooms
  • Transport a notebook, and materials weighing approximately 5 lbs depending on your assignment.
