Job Description

On behalf of RTI International, Headway Workforce Solutions is seeking Part-Time Data Collectors to work as part of a team for the Research and Evaluation Survey for the Public Education Campaign on Tobacco among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender+ (LGBT) community (RESPECT LGBT). This important research study is sponsored by The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).

RESPECT LGBT will evaluate the effectiveness of a media campaign primarily in local bars and nightclubs designed to reduce tobacco use among young adults, ages 18-24 within the LGBT network. Part-Time Data Collectors will work with their team to help bar patrons complete a short screening using a hand-held tablet. Additionally, some Part-Time Data Collectors may also be asked to recruit the bar and nightclub venues in the area with a predominately LGBT clientele.  To be successful on this project, you should have a crucial knowledge of these establishments (i.e., their busiest time).

As a Part-Time Data Collector, you will…

  • Confidently approach and speak to strangers while effectively explaining the importance of this study and adapting to various social environments and areas
  • Document experiences, time and money spent while successfully navigating through a tablet
  • Meticulously account for incentive money paid out to respondents and request additional funds as needed to continue screenings
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times and adhere to project protocol requirements

Job Requirements

  • Participate in over the phone and in-person training
  • Extensive knowledge of the LGBT community and the local bars and nightclubs that cater to this community
  • Valid ID that can be used to verify legal age (at least 21 years of age) to enter the bars
  • Personal reliable transportation, insurance and a valid driver’s license to be used for study travel
  • Candidates with Field Interviewing and Data Collection experience are encouraged to apply
  • Access to password protected Wi-Fi for transmitting data
  • Strong comfort level using electronic handheld devices
  • Only candidates with proven reliability in adhering to time commitments, scheduled shifts, and assigned work hours will be considered

Physical Requirements

  • Must travel frequently to respondent locations (bars, nightclubs, etc.)
  • Must be outside and exposed to all types of weather
  • Must be willing to be outside and exposed to all types of weather; and potentially exposed to fumes and odors as might be expected in any outdoor environment (this includes cigarette smoke)
  • Must be physically able to go stand, walk and go up and down stairs for to 4 hours
  • Must be able to communicate effectively through speech and listening in loud and crowded locations
  • Must read text verbatim from a hand-held tablet screen
  • Must physically transport hand-held tablet,  equipment, and materials

Hours and Pay Rate

  • This position falls under the Services Contract Act (SCA). Hourly wage will be determined based on the county in which work is being performed
  • Short-term, part-time that is expected to last between April and July 2018. Additional work may be available depending on data collection and project needs
  • Flexible schedule
  • Available to work on average 3-4 nights a week, primarily weekends (majority of the work will be on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, 9 PM – 2 AM or later) with a possibility of weekend afternoons for a special event such as Gay Pride
